Sunil Gavaskar opened the secret, said - he had left the ground against Australia in 1981 because of abusive verdict

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar  dismissed lbw off Dennis Lillee during a Test match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) between India and Australia in 1981. However, the ball clearly hit the bat and then the pad. Angered by the umpire’s decision, Sunil Gavaskar angrily asked his partner Chetan Chauhan to leave the field.

INCIDENT THAT HAPPEN IN GROUND IN 1981 AGAINST AUSTRALIA

Chauhan was at the bowling end at that time, but Chauhan stopped walking before Gavaskar left the ground. After Gavaskar was wrongly given out, this incident of asking Chauhan to leave the field with him like this is still fresh in the minds of cricket fans till date. In such a situation, after so many years, Gavaskar talked with former Australian fast bowler Damien Fleming. At that time, Gavaskar was the captain of the Indian team. In a conversation on Channel 7 cricket, Gavaskar told this story openly.

He said, My bat had an inside edge, as you can see from the forward short leg. They had done nothing. He did not move at all.

Dennis Lille said me that it hit you there and I was trying to say no. I got hit and then I asked Chetan to go back with me. For years, it has been believed that sunil Gavaskar   was furious at umpire after being given out incorrectly.

However, as the former Indian captain now points out, the decision was not as effective as the Australian players were constantly sledding Gavaskar.

Gavaskar further said, there is a misconception that I was angry with the decision of LBW. Gavaskar said that yes, it was disturbing, but my leaving from the ground was just that I was going to the change room near Chetan. Then the Australian players sled me and said abusive words. They told me that Gate Lost, this was the moment when I came back and asked Chetan to walk with me.

Bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar returns, will play T20 match against this team!

Gavaskar continued, but why walk off? A day before that we had a situation when we felt that Ellen Border was out three times and then after completing the century. He was bowled near the feet and went to the square leg umpire to confirm the umpire’s decision. Syed Kirmani told me that if it is given a notout then I am going from the ground.

I said you can’t do that and they said no, my honesty is being questioned here. So the word walk off was there, so when it happened the next day it was there. After this controversy, the Indian team won this Test match under the captaincy of Gavaskar.

Shahid Durrani, the then manager of Team India and Bapu Nadkarni, assistant manager, handled the situation and asked Chetan Chauhan to stay on the field.
